Around four o'clock Kyiv time on 24 February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation", the declared goal of which was the "demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine". Within minutes, Russia launched missile attacks across Ukraine. Russian troops invaded Ukraine near Kharkiv, Kherson in the south, Chernihiv and Sumy in the north, entering from Russia, Belarus and the temporarily occupied Crimea, and temporarily took control of some territories of Ukraine.
